Star K Ranch October 24, 2010	We spent the afternoon at Star K Ranch here in Aurora, Colorado. It is a nature preserve, and it also provides for children, classes and educational materials. Today's theme was Halloween.




Reversi game, best score September 3, 2010	Indoors today because I am sick, so I played Microsoft's 'Reversi' game for a couple hours. I think the goal of the game is to take all the computer's pieces, in the fewest moves, and 18 blank spaces is the best I can do.




Our cat 'Yak' passed away August 26, 2010	Our cat 'Yak' passed away this morning. More about her here A few hours after she died, our pink rose bush made a yellow flower.

Easter Eggs and problems with original Tetris January 28, 2010	Back in the days of Windows 3.0 ( about 1990 ), several games came with Windows. The primary reasons for shipping games as a part of Windows were and are; (1) Fun!, and (2) to provide an activity that improves a person's skill at using a mouse.
	1. The game of Tetris saves high scores. Problem is the programmer used an integer data type to store each high score. The largest positive number an integer type of number can store is 32,767. 32,767 + 1 = -1 32,767 + 2 = -2 and so on. My highest score is 32,767 + -16,975 = 49,742 Does this mean that neither the programmer, or anyone at Microsoft, ever scored more than 32,767?
	2. There are two 'easter eggs' in the game. - One is "Dave loves Kate more than Chocolate!! and Omar sez: Kappa Sigs Rock!!!" - the other is "Damn Bitchin Tetris Game for Win3"

Yak is now 19 years old January 2, 2010	Our cat 'Yak' is now 19 years old. Her breed is 'Ragdoll' and she is named Yak because she talks so much. Her personality is like that of a Golden Retriever. Our other cat 'Gag' passed away in 2001 from breast cancer. Her name comes from the gagging noise she was making when I found her in a bush one night ( at that time she belonged to someone else ) when the temperature was -5 F. Also, being a bicycle racer ( click here ), if I was ever hit and killed by a car, then a race would be named after me. Something like; "The John Bickmore memorial race" = how boring! Instead, why not have the race named; "The Gag and Yak Hill Climb"!
